Edinburgh Living History are our multi award- winning team, who interpret the history of the castle in a variety of entertaining ways in Edwardian costume - bringing alive the history of the house. Each performance is carefully devised by Edinburgh Living History to be as historically accurate as possible and include a touch of drama and a soupcon of humour. You will walk through the Castle on a special tour watching the performance unfold.

September 1916, and Britain is living under the shadow of the First World War. News is filtering out about the enormous losses since the commencement just six weeks earlier of the infamous Battle of the Somme. Anxious families whose loved ones have been conscripted into the armed forces dread the arrival of the telegram man. We might imagine a nation paralysed and unable to think of anything else. And yet, as newspapers of the day reveal, unlike the Second World War, a surprising amount of normal life was carrying on in 1916. Cinemas and theatres were open, there was even a sale on in Jenners.
You are cordially invited to join Mr William Reid, the owner of Lauriston Castle in 1916, for a light breakfast as he reads through the papers of the day. He will lead guests on a tour through the rooms where he will describe life there for his family, the staff, and wider community, in the context of the war. Hear about Harry the driver enlisting, pride in the local football teams, Mrs Reid's connection to a famously pioneering female doctor, and more.
