Acclaimed guitarist Gabriel Santiago will open the evening with his stellar band, performing his original compositions and special arrangements of Brazilian music classics. The Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra (CJRO) consistently pushes the boundaries of the standard big band genre, often incorporating funk, soul, and Latin jazz into its repertoire. Since its inception in 2012, the CJRO has been dedicated to performing outstanding concerts with the finest professional musicians in the region, featuring exceptional artists from both within and outside the jazz genre. About Gabriel Santiago:
A native of Brazil, is a distinguished composer, arranger, and virtuoso on both acoustic and electric guitars. With a prolific career spanning 14 albums, including CDs and DVDs, Santiago has garnered acclaim for his compositions, hailed as "stunners" by JazzTimes Magazine.
Renowned as "a young master at both the acoustic and electric guitars", Santiago's musical journey includes invaluable mentorship from jazz luminaries such as Pat Metheny, Adam Rogers, and Maria Schneider. He is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award, further highlighting his exceptional talent and contribution to the music industry.
Notably, Santiago holds a Doctoral Degree in Music Composition from the University of Texas at Austin. His collaborations span a diverse spectrum of artists, from Chris Potter and Stefon Harris to John Clayton and Janek Gwizdala, from Odair Assad and Gilson Peranzzetta to André Mehmari and Romero Lumbambo. He also had the honor of being the first artist to record with renowned Recording Engineer Master Rupert Neve's inaugural line of microphones.
Beyond his instrumental prowess, Gabriel Santiago is a versatile composer, crafting music for a broad array of ensembles – from Symphony Orchestras to Jazz Combos, and everything in between. Colorado Brazil Fest (CBF) is the largest festival of its kind in the Colorado, and also one of the largest in the nation, with 1500-2000 participants each year since 2012. Colorado Brazil Fest is hosted by Boulder Samba School, the leading organization in the state dedicated to promoting the rich heritage of Brazilian music, dance, and culture, with a track record of engaging thousands of local residents in performances and educational music programs since its inception in 2009.
