Leeds jazz/Latin/world music promoter/DJ legend Lubi Jovanovic (DJ Lubi) loves Brazilian music. He has done for the four decades he's been in the music business. From DJing club sessions and hosting Brazilian carnival parties to promoting live shows with Brazilian music legends including Tania Maria, Timbalada, Joyce, Azymuth, Seu Jorge and Ed Motta. And always supporting the best of the Leeds Brazilian music scene over the decades. Tonight, he celebrates the current strong local Brazilian music scene with a night featuring three of the bands billed as "Brazilian Beats Leeds".
Headliners are Gustavo Andrade & The Samba Jazz Allstars, led by the young Brazilian saxophonist from Sao Paulo who has lit up the Leeds jazz scene in the last 3 years. Gustavo Andrade moved from sunny Sao Paulo to rainy Leeds in 2019 to study jazz at Leeds Conservatoire. He quickly threw himself into the vibrant jazz scene at the music university and soon found himself in some of the best jazz/soul/hip-hop ensembles there including Elusive Dip, Yusuf Yellow & The Energy Collective, Naali Collective and Portraits. In summer 2021, he met DJ Lubi and said he hadn't played any Brazilian music in the two years he'd been at Leeds Conservatoire, only jazz. Lubi immediately put that right by telling him to form his own Brazilian jazz quintet and he'd book them for a gig. The Gustavo Andrade Quintet was born and started gigging for Lubi at his Leeds shows playing classic bossa and samba jazz.
For a special Brazil Carnival 2022 party at Hifi Club, Lubi asked Gustavo to expand the quintet to a mighty samba jazz big band of 11 musicians by adding extra horns plus percussionists and singers. Gustavo specially arranged Brazilian carnival music for the party from Rio (samba) and Salvador (axé) as well as some frevo from Pernambuco. Sadly the event had to be cancelled due to last minute unavailability of both singers but the good news is this fantastic allstar band will finally be heard at this "Brazilian Beats Leeds" showcase at Brudenell Social Club. Gustavo has the original line-up confirmed with Portuguese singer Sueli Gil on lead vocals. They will be playing Gustavo's arrangements of classic Brazilian music by artists such as Leci Brandao, Seu Jorge, Jorge Ben, Ivete Sangalo, Tim Maia, Gilberto Gil and Djavan. The band are :
Gustavo Andrade - tenor sax/bandleader, Victor Estevez (Rumberos de Palo) - trumpet, Emyr Penry Dance (Awen Ensemble) - trumpet, bass guitar - tbc, Eddie Bowes (Awen Ensemble) - drums, JJ Petrie (Plantfood) - percussion, Joe Redgrave (Tempo Feliz) - percussion, Theo Black (Spacey Basement Cult) - guitar, Ruben Maric (2/22) - keys, Sueli Gil - vocals.
Supporting are Carioca Soul, the Brazilian bossa nova/Brazilian soul jazz outfit led by longtime Leeds jazz and soul pianist Wayne Pollock. His soul band Brothers On The Slide were a mainstay of the Leeds scene for many years and as a solo artist and session player, Wayne has supported Jools Holland and featured on a Top 40 album by Ten Millennia. He's always had a love for Brazilian music, especially bossa nova, and as a pianist he was drawn to the music of Rio's legendary pianist/bandleader Sergio Mendes. In 2018, he put together a line-up of top Leeds jazz players to play the music of Sergio's hugely popular Brasil 66 band but over the last few years, Wayne has written original material with that Brasil 66 spirit to add to the cover versions. On this night, they will play music from their debut EP which will feature both originals alongside some Brazilian bossa/samba jazz classics. In 2020, Wayne Pollock was awarded an Arts Council Of England grant to go study Brazilian music at it's centre, Rio de Janeiro, but he had to defer the trip for a few years due to the pandemic. The chance to continue his Brazilian music songwriting journey in the country of origin and working/recording with some of the musicians that played with Sergio Mendes and other bossa nova legends is a dream come true.
Carioca Soul are :
Wayne Pollock (piano/keyboards/musical director) - tbc (drums) - John Marley (bass) - Richard Jevons (guitar) - Danny Templeman (percussion) - Kate Peters (vocals) - Jenny Smith (vocals)
Finally, bringing some Rio carnival style percussive sounds to the party are Leeds Samba, the city’s much respected and loved Brazilian percussion samba school. Led by samba percussion mestre (master) Gez Heb and Brazilian samba dancer/percussionist Thali Bento, this samba drum ensemble is one of the top samba schools in the north of England. They've performed across the UK at festivals and carnivals and in Leeds at the annual Vamos Leeds Festival in Millennium Square, as well as DJ Lubi's Brazilian events across the city. Whether rocking Rio style samba do carnaval and batucada beats or the hypnotic Afrocentric axé grooves of Salvador de Bahia, they always bring the authentic sounds of Brazilian carnival to the heart of Leeds. They'll be playing a set in the crowd between the two live bands.
