Although films such as The Outsiders, Sixteen Candles, Class and Taps were pivotal in bringing to the big screen the generation of actors who would be deemed as The Brat Pack and satellite stars, The Breakfast Club is the first quintessential teen orientated film to feature the key actors of the group.Written, produced and directed by John Hughes, this indie coming-of-age comedy drama is now considered to be one of the best films of the 1980s and one of the best teen films of all time, having been chosen for preservation by the Library of Congress. Few films scream ‘alienated youth’ and truly give voice to the fears and insecurities of youth as much
as The Breakfast Club succeeds in doing.
Five high school students are given a 7am Saturday detention; they have nothing in common, they are: ‘a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and criminal’. They begin the day antagonising each other, but over the hours that follow a unique bond is formed between the five as their deepest secrets and fears are shared – along with the reasons for being given detention.
Here is a rare chance to see this classic on a big screen and punch the air along with Judd Nelson to the closing track ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’, synonymous with the film.
