Instructor - Gregory Curci

Gregory Curci is a sculptor/maker who has made a life as an independent artist/model maker/patternmaker/art conservator. Known for his solar-powered sculptures ( featured in an episode of the television show Curious George) and his work as an art conservator, he has an extensive background in making things both artistic and commercial/industrial. His clients include many of the local museums, colleges, and major corporations.

Class Description

Brass details and hardware have been found on wooden objects made thousands of years ago. Many of the same tools that shape wood will work on brass, including saws (not the Saw Stops, unfortunately), chisels, files, drills, and scribers.

This class will focus on making a brass hinge with a multi-shop mini-tour. The parts will be cut, shaped, polished, and finally assembled with silver solder. Simple ways of designing your own hinge patterns and even working from photographs of hinges that you found on objects out in the world will be discussed.

Students will be using a bandsaw and jigsaw as well as drill press and polishing tools, and will be instructed in safely working with small objects. Experience with these tools is helpful but not necessary. Simple jigs and fixtures for holding small parts will be provided along with a discussion that will inspire you to make your own jigs that suit your personal needs. Students will leave with a completed hinge and material for a second.

Material Fee

The materials fee for this class is $50. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts payments in cash.
