It’s summer, the cicadas are singing, and the Lafayette family has returned to their late patriarch’s Arkansas home to deal with the remains of his estate. Toni, the eldest daughter, hopes they’ll spend the weekend remembering and reconnecting over their beloved father. Bo, her brother, wants to recoup some of the funds he spent caring for Dad at the end of his life. But things take a turn when their estranged younger brother, Franz, appears late one night, and mysterious objects are found among the clutter. Suddenly, long-hidden secrets and buried resentments can’t be contained, and the family is forced to face the ghosts of their past.APPROPRIATE was developed through participation with the Vineyard Arts Project and Sundance Institute Theatre Lab beginning in 2011, with a premiere production at the Actors Theatre of Louisville in their Humana Festival of New Plays. After performances at Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theatre and Washington, D.C.’s Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, it opened Off-Broadway in 2014, winning the distinguished Obie Award for Best New American Play. A Broadway production, produced by Second Stage Theater and starring Sarah Paulson and Corey Stoll, continues an extended run in New York City.
Directed by Ayò Jeriah Demps, who previously directed MISERY for The Ensemble Company and who appeared in THE LYONS, the production will star Ensemble Company artistic director Matthew MacDermid (THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT, PERFECT ARRANGEMENT, CLYBOURNE PARK) as Bo Lafayette, Janine Papin (THE NORMAL HEART, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?) as Toni Lafayette, and Shelby Mae Randle (HYSTERIA, STUPID FUCKING BIRD, SPEECH & DEBATE, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?) as River. Making their Ensemble Company debuts are Jessica Hamilton as Rachael Kramer-Lafayette, Maddy Poston as Cassidy Kramer-Lafayette, Bennet Preuss as Rhys Thurston, Andres Procel as Franz Lafayette, and Phoenix Swonger as Ainsley Kramer-Lafayette.
APPROPRIATE will run May 3-12, 2024 at Imagine Performing Arts Center (1220 Oviedo Mall Boulevard, Oviedo, FL 32765), with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm, Sundays at 2:00pm, and a special industry night performance on Monday, May 6th, at 8:00pm. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors (60 and up), and $18 for students (with I.D.) and are available for purchase by visiting www.imagineperformingartscenter.org/events.
