About this Event
BrainChug is where curiosity meets a night out.
A live, one-hour experience in Vancouver bars with one expert, one topic, and a room full of curious people, all with a drink in hand.
Evolved For Each Other: The Social Brain in an Anti-Social Age
Why did humans evolve such outsized brains compared to the rest of the animal kingdom? We often think of our intelligence as our capacity for logic and reason, but the Social Brain Hypothesis suggests that it arose to meet the demands of group living—managing trust, cooperation, and reputation.
In this session, we explore how navigating the complexities of social life shaped our biology. From the evolutionary power of gossip to the modern epidemic of loneliness, this talk examines how our biology is built for a world that we are now rapidly changing.
Meet the Speaker: Dr. Azim Shariff
Dr. Azim Shariff is a Canada 150 Research Chair and Professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia. His work focuses on how morality intersects with religion, culture, and economics, and examines how deeply rooted moral intuitions shape modern institutions, behaviour, and decision-making.
What to Expect:
- A relaxed bar setting, not a formal lecture
- A one-hour, engaging session led by an expert
- A short Q&A at the end
- Time to stay, chat, and meet others who are just as curious
If this sounds like your kind of evening, we would love to have you in the room.
