A dazzling evening of banjo & fiddle music from local favorite Brad Kolodner and the mighty-talented New Zealand-born fiddler George Jackson
About this Event

Celebrate the release of Brad Kolodner & George Jackson's brand new record Shady Lane with an evening of fiddle & banjo music at the Green Room. They'll play banjo and fiddle duets from the new album along with a healthy blend of double banjo duets, twin fiddles, vocal harmonies and a special guest or two!

George Jackson and Brad Kolodner met years ago in a late-night jam session at the hallowed Appalachian String Band Music Festival in Clifftop, West Virginia and have since formed a special musical bond that runs deep, across continents and through a number of recorded projects. There’s something in the synergy of their musical personalities that encourages exciting interplay, daring one another at a moment's notice to step to the side of a path for a spell and play something that keeps the listener, and player, on the edge of their seat. They do this while staying fully in the groove and true to the soul of Old Time banjo and fiddle music. It’s with this spirit in mind that George and Brad wanted to create an album of recordings that captures some of these live moments and brings their interplay front and center. Shady Lane was recorded as an impulsive decision, after a three-week concert tour in New Zealand, fitting in with the ethos of encouraging each other to take a chance. The session was organized a week in advance and recorded over just two days in Spring of 2024.

Brad Kolodner is a Baltimore-based banjo player who primarily performs with the acoustic roots quartet Cham City Junction and with the father-son stringband Ken & Brad Kolodner. He represents the next generation of Old-Time musicians pushing the boundaries of the tradition into uncharted territory. Regarded for his delicate touch, expressive style, and original compositions, Kolodner has rapidly gained national attention for his unique approach to the banjo. Brad is a major driver behind the bustling Old-Time and Bluegrass scene in his hometown of Baltimore. He co-founded the bi-weekly Baltimore Old Time Jam held at the Green Room, monthly Baltimore Square Dance and the annual Baltimore Old-Time Music Festival held at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.

George Jackson is a Nashville-based fiddle player and the 2022 IBMA Instrumentalist Of The Year Momentum Award Winner, who performs as a band leader and fiddler for hire with artists such as The Jacob Jolliff Band, Jake Blount, Tall Poppy String Band, The Local Trio, Front Country, Peter Rowan, Missy Raines, Charm City Junction and others. Born in New Zealand, George grew up in a musical family and first heard bluegrass music around the age of 14, immediately falling in love with the style he started trying to work out how to play it from recordings and from mentors in New Zealand. Moving to Australia as a 16-year-old, he won the Australian National Bluegrass Championship on fiddle three times and toured the country with his bluegrass band, "The Company", playing all the major folk festivals on the Australian circuit. As a resident of Nashville and the USA from 2016, George has released three albums of fiddle tunes, "Time and Place" in 2019 and "Hair & Hide" in 2021 and most recently “George Jackson’s Local Trio” with Eli Broxham and Frank Evans in 2023. He was awarded first place in the Mike Auldridge tune composition award by the DC bluegrass union in both 2019 and 2021 for his tunes "Chapel Hill Deer Stalk" and "Neighbor Mike" respectively. He also sparked a viral fiddle tune frenzy with his composition "Dorrigo", when hundreds of musicians learned the tune and posted videos of themselves playing it online, becoming known as the "#dorrigochallenge".
