“It’s all gonna be okay” — that’s the refrain, yet it sits on top of a haunting feeling of loneliness contained in the verses and melody of Brad Colerick’s latest song, “Javier.” The song unveils the experience of a nine-year old boy on a trek to the USA to reunite with his parents who fled the fallout of El Salvador’s civl war. Colerick writes and sings with the voice of an empath and the backing of stellar musicians on this piece, inspired by Javier Zamora’s memoir, Solito. This latest effort finds him playing with visuals as well, evoking the same depth as his heartfelt songwriting.
Colerick has caught the ear of music critics and music lovers alike. Billboard listed him among “a baker’s dozen of acts to watch in the folk community around the world.” The Associated Press said “Colerick's stories are worth hearing… His warm, sunny, homey tenor brings alive the characters, places and relationships…” He has appeared in the Top 5 of both the Euro-Americana and U.S. Folk-DJ charts, and was a finalist at the coveted Kerrville New Folk songwriting competition.
A Nebraska native and long-time Southern California resident, Colerick hosts and performs weekly at Wine & Song — a popular showcase in South Pasadena for touring Americana artists. The series has been going for 16 years and is now part of the fabric of the community, where Colerick is known as the Nighttime Mayor. His chatter between songs is as endearing as his carefully crafted lyrics and melodies. “Javier” is just the latest example of songs with themes of hope and community that define his music.
“I wanted to write an immigrant story,” Colerick notes. “I’ve had close contact with countless undocumented migrants through the years. In my experience, they are some of the most hard-working, genuine people I’ve ever known. Our country is a better place because of their contributions. When I stumbled upon Javier Zamora’s memoir, I knew immediately it was a story I needed to share.”
“Javier” is the third single from Colerick’s upcoming album, following the title track “Travelers,” and “Slipaway” — a song about Colerick’s mother and the horse she cared for as young girl. The album is slated for a July 31, 2026 release on Back 9 Records.
