Tired of your family already? Got some gifts you want to exchange?
Come celebrate BOXING DAY at Poor David's with The Dead Thing. We'll have egg nog, a boxing day gift exchange & try to raise some money for a good charity. More details to come.
THE DEAD THING
Back in 1989, a KZPS afternoon DJ named Scott Parkin talked Club Dada into handing an evening over to the Deadheads. The lineup was a handful of local players, and the headliner was a prerecorded Bob Weir radio show. Nobody seemed to mind.
It caught on. The Dead Thing became a Deep Ellum Saturday afternoon institution, with a rotating cast of some of Dallas’s best musicians working through the Grateful Dead songbook. Over the years that included New Bohemians Kenny Withrow and John Bush, plus Sam Berkow, Scott Johnson, and plenty of others. The room filled up, the patio overflowed, vendors set up shop, and the bar stayed busy. It ran until 2002, when DJs started taking over the clubs where live bands used to play.
In 2023, Kenny decided to bring it back. What you get is what the Dead always offered: songs as a starting point, not a script. The jams go where they go.
