Box Making Basics
About this Event
This is a basic technique class, using the available redwood on hand, with flexibility to allow participant’s design input. Class will be two consecutive days, divided into three hour sessions and attendance for the full six hours will be required to complete the project. Both classes run from 9:00AM to noon.
The class is limited to only two people to allow detailed instruction on each step in the process. Some familiarity with a table saw and table mounted router preferable but not required. Participants will carry home a completed box, finished on the inside and ready for their choice of outside look. Samples of various finish options will be available to help in selecting the finish option of your choice.
Day 1 will start with your personal choice of the available specific boards for the project, taking in design considerations for box size and shape, and will include your own design options where practical. Then we’ll plane material to thickness, saw pieces to size, and cut 45 degree miter corners for an elegant look. The interior faces will be finished with food safe shellac and glued up for an overnight cure.
Day 2 will begin with cutting and gluing in decorative corner splines for the box and then move on to cutting the top to fit, with a routed recessed lip and simple pull. All parts will then be sanded so that by the end of the day your box will be ready to accept your choice of offsite finishing. All materials will be provided, except your choice of finishing product.
