7PM- MARLA VEE & THE $Studs
FEATURED ARTIST:
MARLA VEE~
Marla Vee had been an artist since her younger years and loved it to a degree that it was her chosen degree in college. As life unfolds, sometimes there are curves that we do not foresee and have to walk away from something that you would have loved to continue. More recently, after not creating art for many years, she decided to begin her art journey again at 68 years old and it was all influenced by the then upcoming life and death dates of David Bowie.
"The original purpose of the portraits were to get my drawing and painting skills back enough to make a Bowie shrine. I told myself it would probably take 30 portraits to get my skills back."
From July 1 until recently, she created 30 Bowie images in a self-challenge.
In this show, you'll get to see her journey of starting raw on paper "painting for the pure purpose of practicing" and since it was practice the first ones "were part of my fantasy works of what Bowie would like as the DC character The Joker, and after two practice pieces on either 9x12 watercolor paper and a few on 8.5 x11 paper, then i decided to try painting on a 16x20 canvas and found it was a lot easier and liked the results." Ultimately, Marla found her stride finding the artist she is with more fine tuned details in her depictions of Bowie as they come along in her series.
You will also get to see Marla Vee in action as the rockin' punk rocker she is when her punk band plays the last set at the end of the event, closing out a show she probably never imagined she would do, which include two of her loves, Art and Music!
SUPPORTING ARTISTS:
ZAN LEE DUROY~ an artist who has embraced her calling in the short time since she started creating art a couple of years ago. I have had Zan in shows i have created or curated several times because the dedication she has put into her art. Her work is usually an abstract, purposeful color pallet that evokes both calm and drama on the same canvas. Her art is beautiful and her professionalism is outstanding making her an artist that you want to work with, which is why i challenged her with this show, since she too is a Bowie superfan. Although not a portrait artist, i know she will take this show and run with it, on her terms, in her style.
LUCIEN EDWARDS~ As the youngest of the artist in this show, i knew Lucien would be a great fit as a Bonafede Bowie fan. Lucien's been an artist since a young child and now at 24 years old they are able to use art to express feelings specially those created by their deep love of Bowie, which although they never knew seemed to fit in their life as a mentor. Lucien's works are with pen on paper using heavy cross patching and multifaced texturized details. The self-challenge is expressionistic of who is in their drawings, if there is a subject at all to express.
