Boundaries Without Guilt: Say No Without Over-Explaining
About this Event
Boundaries Without Guilt: Say No Without Over-Explaining
You know what you want to say. The difficult part is actually saying it without apologizing for ten minutes.
When faced with demanding requests from work, family, or personal commitments, people often know their true limits but still get trapped:
- Agreeing immediately before checking their actual calendar.
- Writing a five-paragraph justification when one clear sentence is enough.
- Reopening negotiations because someone asked, "Are you sure?"
- Avoiding the conversation entirely out of fear of sounding rude or uncaring.
Hosted by The Open Chapter Collective at the Drucker Center, Boundaries Without Guilt is an intentional, hands-on communication workshop designed for adults who want to communicate personal and professional limits clearly, calmly, and without unnecessary defensiveness.
This is a structured, practical working session. You will work through realistic everyday scenarios using a five-part communication model:
NOTICE → DECIDE → SAY IT → HANDLE PUSHBACK → FOLLOW THROUGH
WHAT YOU WILL LEAVE WITH
- The Personal Boundary Map: A private worksheet separating incoming requests from your actual operational capacity.
- The Clear Response Formula: A reliable structure (Acknowledge → State the Limit → Optional Next Step) adaptable to warm, neutral, or professional tones.
- The Over-Explaining Edit: A hands-on editing exercise to strip away defensive apologies, over-justifications, and accidental commitments.
- The Pushback Response Ladder: Prepared three-tier responses (Restate → Clarify → Close) for when someone challenges your answer.
- 14-Day Boundary Practice Plan: A focused, one-sentence action plan to test in one low-stakes situation over the next two weeks.
- Zero Forced Exposure: No public disclosure of personal situations. No mandatory group role-play. Solo written practice is available for every exercise.
