Curious how Claudette Torneden’s cyanotype series Shrinking in Women’s Work was made? Join us Saturday, July 18, for a hands-on cyanotype workshop!

Cyanotype is an alternative cameraless photographic process developed in the 1840s, then popularized by the first person ever to produce a book entirely illustrated with photographic images and arguably the first woman photographer, Anna Atkins.

In this workshop, you’ll learn the history and fundamentals of the cyanotype process as well as be introduced to its many applications and variations. Each participant will create three original cyanotype prints on varied substrates using botanical and found-object elements and will gain the confidence to apply the cyanotype process to their own art practice.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Claudette Torneden is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans photography, painting, drawing, assemblage, and printmaking. At age 5 she was given a camera for her birthday and became fascinated with photography. She would take her first serious classes in photography and receive her first 35mm camera in middle school and would eventually major in art with a concentration in photography. Today she works in analogue and digital photography, and although she appreciates the conveniences of digital relying on it for many of her projects, her preference remains with film and analogue processes. She finds grounding and balance in the tactile nature of film as well as experimental, antique and cameraless photo chemical processes.

Her background includes education at the University of New Orleans and Memphis College of Art and work experience in photojournalism. Her work has been featured in various publications, exhibited nationwide, and is held in multiple private and corporate collections across the country. Recent and current photography exhibits which feature her work include The Magic of Light in Los Angeles, The 21st National at fotofoto Gallery in New York wherein her work received an honorable mention, and her solo photography exhibit Reflections of Route Sixty-Six at Spiva Center for the Arts in Missouri.
