Botanical Drypoint Printmaking

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be creating an edition of 5 original prints using a printmaking technique called Drypoint. This medium is similar to Etching, but it’s far safer because no dangerous acids are involved. Rembrandt is a well known Old Master who excelled at both Drypoint and Etching.

For botanical subject matter, please bring sketches and line drawings for inspiration and reference. The image needs to measure 4x6 inches; you’ll learn how to incise the image onto a printing plate using a Drypoint needle. If you’re stuck for ideas on what to create, there will be pressed leaves available which make lovely subjects. You’ll also learn how to ink the plate and work with an old fashioned mechanical printing press.

Drypoint gets messy, so please wear old clothes or bring an apron. Also, please bring a pair of dishwashing gloves.

About Alan Li

Artist and conservationist Alan Li uses pencils, ink and paint to document the wonders of the natural world. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops.

Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation.

In 2019, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden.

Alan currently teaches Field Sketching, Nature Drawing and Linocut Printmaking at Toronto Botanical Garden and the High Park Nature Centre.
