Botanical Cyanotypes & Bookmaking Workshop

This workshop will introduce you to cyanotypes – the original “blue print” (also known as “sun prints”) that creates striking blue and white prints. It is dubbed as 'alternative photography' in so much as it is not seen as a traditional photographic process - certainly nowadays where we rely heavily on digital cameras and digitally imagery. It is a beautifully simple, hands-on process and possibilities are endless. Cyanotypes is an immediate, rewarding process that can really feel like magic is unfolding before your eyes!

In the workshop you will be taken through the process, some history and lots of examples to illustrate the potential of the process; and the spend about 2 hours experimenting with the process to make approximately 10 prints of various sizes. This stage is kind of like "free play" where you are encouraged to explore objects, compositions and ideas of your own, with tutor support for tips, tricks and trouble shooting. We will end the workshop with a short bookmaking session, spending about 30 minutes transforming one of your prints in to a hand-stitched book.

People who join this workshop tend to have no experience of the process, and would like to know how to get started. Often they've got a kit or dabbled before, but not been successful and would like guidance on how to approach it differently.

Cyanotypes is a very accessible process, and this workshop is suitable for all ages, abilities and interests. Under 18s or vulnerable adults are to be accompanied by a fully-paying responsible adult.

Artist bio:

This workshop is delivered by Zoe Platt, founder of Short & Few, artist educator and graphics practitioner. Her education and training background is in graphic design and typography, and over time her practice has become more process-driven, with a hands-on and analogue approach to image-making. With over a decade of teaching experience in college-level art and design, as well as TEFL for summer camps (and a stint in China!), her approach to teaching and doing creative things taps in to a broad range of subjects, including sculpture, surface pattern, photography and creative writing. She is at her best when she is teaching and doing creative things - whether this is making books or prints, or working with others and supporting them to find their best creative selves.

As materials and equipment are ordered in advance, we regret that refunds cannot be offered less than 7 days before the workshop date. Please note that Eventbrite’s booking fee is non-refundable.
