De twaalfjarige Palestijnse jongen Youssef is een kind van de Intifada. Hij woont bij zijn moeder, zijn vader zit in de gevangenis en zijn broer wordt gezocht door het Israëlische leger. Hoewel zijn leven wordt gekenmerkt door geweld en onderdrukking, gebruikt Youssef zijn fantasie om te ontsnappen aan de grauwe werkelijkheid van het vluchtelingenkamp waarin hij leeft.
Op een dag, tijdens de jacht op vogels, ontmoet hij de mooie Aïda, een jong meisje en leidster van een kinderbende. Youssef wordt verliefd maar om met Aïda te kunnen trouwen moet hij de drie verloren diamanten terugvinden van een oud familiejuweel die door de grootvader van het meisje uit Zuid-Amerika is meegebracht. Hoe zal Youssef erin slagen om Gaza te verlaten en naar dit verre continent te reizen?
Tale of the Three Jewels is een modern sprookje dat wordt afgewisseld met scènes die de dagelijkse realiteit van het leven in Gaza onder bezetting weergeven: armoede, geweld, opsluiting, beperkte mogelijkheden en wanhoop. De droomachtige film toont het verdriet van een verloren kindertijd en duidt op de noodzaak om de kinderen uit Gaza het recht om te dromen terug te geven. Tale of the Three Jewels is de eerste speelfilm die volledig in Gaza werd opgenomen. De cast bevat bekende Palestijnse acteurs zoals Makram Khouri en Mohammad Bakri. In 1995 werd de film geselecteerd voor het filmfestival van Cannes.

Deze vertoning maakt deel uit van BOSCINEMA: een eclectisch filmprogramma dat focust op verdieping en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. Terwijl de wereld brandt, bouwen De Cinema en Het Bos samen aan een solidaire film community.
Deze zomer presenteren we vier openluchtvertoningen mogelijks op de gezelligste binnenkoer van Antwerpen: de BOStuin.
Voor de vertoning is er Boskeuken: vanaf 19u kan je er vegetarisch voedsel verorberen. Kok van dienst deze avond is Quinten Stoffels.
EN Youssef, a twelve-year-old Palestinian boy, is a child of the Intifada. He lives with his mother, with his father in prison, and his brother wanted by the Israeli army. Although his life is marked by violence and oppression, Youssef uses his imagination to escape the bleak reality of the refugee camp in which he lives.
One day, while hunting birds, he meets the beautiful Aïda, a young girl and the leader of a children’s gang. Youssef falls in love. To marry Aïda, however, he has to find the three lost diamonds from an old family jewel that the girl’s grandfather brought from South America. How will Youssef manage to leave Gaza and travel to this distant continent?
Tale of the Three Jewels is a modern fairy tale alternating with scenes depicting the daily reality of life in Gaza under occupation: poverty, violence, imprisonment, limited possibilities, and despair. The dreamlike film shows the sadness of a lost childhood and indicates the necessity of restoring Gaza’s children’s right to dream. Tale of the Three Jewels is the first feature film to be shot entirely in Gaza. The cast includes well-known Palestinian actors such as Makram Khouri and Mohammad Bakri. In 1995, the film was selected for the Cannes Film Festival.
This screening is part of BOSCINEMA: an eclectic film programme that focuses on reflection and social engagement. While the world is burning, we build a cinephile community rooted in solidarity. This summer, Het Bos and De De Cinema present four open-air screenings in what is perhaps Antwerp’s cosiest courtyard: the BOStuin.
