Borrowed Time is our latest after-hours event: an evening of unforgettable stories and live surgery (yes, really)Take a behind-the-scenes look at the triumphs, tragedies, and turning points of transplants.
From the early use of frogs in skin grafts to the world’s first double hand transplant - completed right here in Leeds – we will be stitching together the past, present, and future of one of medicine’s greatest innovations.
Your hosts for the night are the transplant team from our neighbours at Jimmy’s, better known as St James’s Hospital - Europe’s largest teaching hospital.
There will be a mixture of history, science, and even comedy in the unlikeliest of places — all delivered with refreshing honesty and a lot of heart. But not just hearts… also livers, kidneys, and whatever else this lot can get their hands on.
The team will be performing a transplant demonstration alongside footage of real surgery in our Victorian Operating Theatre, so brace yourself, folks.
How are your sewing skills? Hop on the suture station in the interval to try your hand at surgical stitches with a Surgical Care Practitioner.
You won’t need a medical background to enjoy this. Just an open mind - and maybe a strong stomach.
Doors open at 6:00 PM, giving you time to enjoy a drink and explore the galleries before the event starts.
This is a limited capacity event – early booking is strongly recommended
