About this Event

What if anyone with a story could create a documentary?

This event brings together emerging and amateur filmmakers for an accessible, community-driven day of learning, exchange, and inspiration in The Hague. Designed to lower barriers to participation in film culture, it creates a space where people can gain hands-on experience, share knowledge, and engage in dialogue about what it really means to make a film without institutional support.

Aimed at supporting amateur filmmakers, this event offers a workshop on the fundamentals of safe filmmaking in a variety of environments — whether you're working on a professional assignment or creating content for your YouTube channel. Led by an experienced filmmaker with over 30 years in the industry, the workshop highlights essential aspects of safe filmmaking practices that are often overlooked.

After a short break, we will continue with a screening of several short films created by local filmmakers from The Hague. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring amateur and beginner filmmakers, who will reflect on and share their experiences of creating a film from A to Z entirely on their own. We will conclude the event with a networking session.

Open to all! Please note that seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot in advance.

Agenda

🕑: 11:00 AM - 01:00 PM
Workshop: The fundamentals of safe filmmaking with Kevin Augello

Info: A practical workshop on content and documentary making in ‘hostile environments’ by Kevin Augello, a filmmaker with international experience and a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in the UK, focusing on avoiding and potentially dealing with the human factor and safe operational practices in the natural environment. Participants will gain insights into planning, research and preparation through thorough examination of various case studies.

🕑: 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM
Lunch break

Info: Please bring your own lunch!

🕑: 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM
Screening of selected short films by emerging filmmakers from The Hague

Info: A screening of selected amateur documentary film projects made in The Hague. Many of these projects address socially important themes and are supported by independent academic research conducted by the filmmakers themselves. By combining personal engagement with research curiosity, these filmmakers demonstrate how a documentary can serve as a tool for personal reflection, social impact, and storytelling.

🕑: 03:30 PM - 04:15 PM
Panel discussion and Q&A with the filmmakers

Info: A panel discussion reflecting on the process of making a documentary film from A to Z. Rather than focusing on established industry professionals, this discussion highlights peer-to-peer knowledge sharing among amateur filmmakers themselves. Panelists will discuss topics such as developing an idea, conducting research, shaping a narrative, working with limited budgets, filming in local communities, editing, and sharing their work with audiences. This format emphasises the value of lived experience and practical problem-solving, helping participants understand that filmmaking knowledge can circulate horizontally within communities.
