About this Event
BOOMBOX humbly celebrates our 19-YEAR ANNIVERSARY [SAT.12/6] with none other than Stones Throw Records bossman PEANUT BUTTER WOLF + Ultimate Breaks & Beats co-creator BREAKBEAT LOU [NYC]!!
Founder of one of the most important independent record labels of all time, PEANUT BUTTER WOLF has been a man on a mission since the late 70s when he started buying records in San Jose, CA. That mission is to find, create, and share amazing music. In 1984 he started DJing and producing hip hop and in 1996 he founded the now legendary Stones Throw Records. Via Stones Throw he's put out some of the most influential albums and artists of our generation. Madlib, J Dilla, MF Doom, Quasimoto, Lootpack, Dam-Funk, Anderson .Paak, Guilty Simpson, Oh No, Knxwledge, Mndsgn, the list is endless. His stellar 1999 solo LP, "My Vinyl Weighs A Ton", was hugely influential on us during our formative years. All the while...he's been buying records. He's amassed a collection that's truly the stuff of legend...as varied as it is massive. 8,000+ of those records are now housed at his infamous Highland Park vinyl bar, Gold Line, which he opened in 2018. Last time he rocked at our "Boombox In The Park" event in 2022 he nearly cracked Levitt Pavillion into pieces! We are truly honored to have him back on our decks with an exclusive DJ set to help us celebrate this 19-year milestone!
Hip hop pioneer BREAKBEAT LOU is one of the single most important people in the history of the genre. Starting out as a graffiti writer and b-boy in the Bronx in the early 70s, he witnessed the birth of hip hop at park jams featuring the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, & Kool Herc. That's when he knew he wanted to be a DJ. In 1980, a chance meeting with "Breakbeat" Lenny Roberts at a record pool meeting spawned arguably the most important compilation series of all time. In an early 80s era when drum machines ruled the airwaves, Lou & Lenny sought to put out records to help showcase the foundational breakbeats they heard at those original park jams. Ultimate Breaks & Beats, and its predecessor Octopus Breaks, did just that. Compiling and re-editing rare and iconic breakbeats from across the map, these compilations introduced generations of young DJs to the foundations of hip hop. When producers like Marley Marl started sampling in the mid 80s, these records became integral source material to pull from. To this day THOUSANDS of songs have sampled them and you'd be hard-pressed to find a producer that hasn't used them or a DJ that doesn't have multiple copies of them. We couldn't be more hyped to be bringing the icon back to LA to rock with us for this special occasion!
It's hard to believe it's been a full 19 years since we started this little party, but we're honored to still be playing and presenting this music in Los Angeles. With these 2 certified legends joining us to celebrate, you already know this is about to be a wild one. Not only that, the BEAT SWAP MEET fam will be curating a special Vinyl Market downstairs! If you're about that life, grab your DISCOUNT PRESALE TICKETS now. We can't wait to see you. Thank you, Los Angeles!

Since September 2nd, 2006, Boombox has provided a home for Los Angeles hip hop lovers to gather every first Saturday of the month and celebrate the genre’s most respected DJs and producers. Celebrating their 15-year anniversary in 2021, they’ve gained a faithful following of music aficionados who all share one common trait: the love of hip hop culture.
Residents Inka One, Ben Diggin, and Mantron have created a signature sound and energy that is authentic, inclusive, and fiercely committed to promoting the culture and artistry of hip hop. For the past 18 years, Boombox has given Los Angeles a home for hip hop connoisseurs who understand the importance of the DJ. Since its inception, their mission has remained pure: to provide an honest hip hop/DJ-centric night that caters to the working-class crowd. No frills, no shiny aesthetics; just the music and DJ skills speaking for themselves.
Boombox has made an indelible impact on Los Angeles’ rich music culture and has helped introduce audiences to some of Los Angeles’ finest, such as Flying Lotus and Blu, while simultaneously giving Angelinos an opportunity to catch hip hop legends like Pete Rock, DJ Quik, Ali Shaheed Muhammed, 9th Wonder, Marley Marl, Stretch & Bobbito, Mix Master Mike, & countless others. Boombox is a destination for the world’s best hip hop DJs to come play the music they love; it’s as simple as that.
In a time fraught with division, Boombox stands tall as a Los Angeles staple where old friends unite, where new ones are made, and where all are welcomed and invited to experience a special night where the hip hop DJ shines.
