Boom! Engaging Boomer Volunteers In Your Not-For-Profit

The Baby Boom generation was born between 1946 and 1964. Today this demographic ranges in age from 56 to 74. There are currently over 40,000 Boomer residents in Greater Victoria – prime volunteering age! Their motivations, however, are very different from younger volunteers. Boomers value independence and often want to take ownership of a project. They can also have multiple pressures on their free time, taking care of elderly parents or grandchildren. Learn other characteristics unique to Boomers and the special steps you can take to recruit, retain and honour this growing demographic in your organization.

• How your organization measures up in terms of recruitment, training, retention and recognition of older adult volunteers;

• How you can retain these volunteers longer by setting up “a la carte” assignments;

• How to ensure your volunteers stay safe during Covid-19 restrictions by working from home or at a distance;

• Where to find Boomer volunteers;

• How you may be able to turn them into donors and spokespeople for your organization.

For the past 20 years, Nancy has been engaging volunteers and raising awareness of their good works with several non-profits including Habitat for Humanity Victoria, the International Institute for Child Rights and Development and Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon.

From planning conferences to evaluating projects and from tutoring new Canadians to sorting books at the Times Colonist Book Drive, Nancy is passionate about volunteering herself. She loves the people she meets, the fulfillment it provides and the new skills she learns.
