About this Event

BookWoman 2nd Thursday Poetry Reading and Open Mic welcomes award-winning features Allisa Cherry and Lindsey Royal Wayland on Thursday, May 14, from 7:15 to 9:00 p.m. CDT. Cindy Huyser and Julia Ross co-host and a “round robin” open mic follows. Wayland will join us in-store while Cherry will feature via Zoom.

If you're joining us in-store at 5501 N. Lamar #A-105, be sure to bring a mask, as BookWoman continues to require them in the spirit of protecting the vulnerable among us. And if you're joining us via Zoom, be sure to register via Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/eG0wr1EbT1WYliXCzakBOA) and to log into your Zoom account with email and password before accessing the link.

Allisa Cherry is the author of the poetry collection An Exodus of Sparks (Michigan State University Press) and the 2024 recipient of the Wheelbarrow Books Poetry Prize (RCAH Center for Poetry). Her work has recently appeared in journals such as Rattle, Chicago Quarterly, Jet Fuel Review, and The Penn Review. Raised in an irradiated town in rural Arizona, she now makes her home in Portland, Oregon where she teaches workshops for immigrants and refugees transitioning to a life in the U.S. and serves as an associate poetry editor for West Trade Review.

Lindsey Royal Wayland is a poet, calligrapher, and researcher with an MFA in poetry from Pacific University. Wayland is the winner of the 2026 RHINO Poetry Founders’ Prize and has been published or is forthcoming in Bellevue Literary Review, Southern Humanities Review, swamp pink, The Florida Review, The Harvard Advocate, The Amsterdam Review, the Haiku Society of America, The Citron Review, and elsewhere. A Pushcart Prize nominee, a finalist for the 2025 Barbara Deming Money for Women and the 2024 New Letters Poetry Prize, Wayland’s poetry has been supported by multiple grants and residencies. A fifth-generation Texan, she lives in the Hill Country with her husband and three children. Find her online at www.lindseywayland.com.
