Books on Your Head - Workshop

Crafting workshops for children and their families to make headwear inspired by a favourite book for Manchester Day, which this year is celebrating the joy of reading and books, and the city's link with Barcelona.

Would you like to take part in Manchester Day on Sunday 26 July - make a book-inspired head dress or hat and wear it in the city for Manchester Day... come along to the workshop and tell us about your favourite book, then make a hat.

Wear your book-inspired hat to watch the Parade and then take part in the Hat Walk at 3pm on Sunday 26 July, taking place in Central Library as part of Manchester Day. The Best Hats will win prizes!

Workshops aimed at:

Children aged 7 upwards with a family member or carer can design a book cover which will be attached to a headpiece that children can take home and wear to school for the next World Book Day...or bring to Manchester Day, for the Hat Walk.

Young people aged 12-15 interested in design and making/craft/art who would like to learn to make a head dress.

Places are limited, so please book in advance.

Manchester Day is produced by Walk the Plank, and artists from Walk the Plank are working with staff from the Library service to celebrate reading, books and the world of imagination through these workshops and the special events in Central Library which will be open from 11.30 - 5pm on Sunday 26 July.

These workshops are supported by Manchester City Council and Arts Council England.

Artist Brian Hanlon and his creative assistants will make templates/head dress bases in advance so that the workshop focuses on decoration of the head wear, for young children: eg. designing a 2D book cover - for an imaginary book or a favourite book. Older children might learn to make the whole head piece from scratch in cardboard, or make more elaborate headwear using the templates.
