SATURDAY | OCTOBER 19 | 10:30 – 11:30 AM | Norma Kershaw Auditorium | Onsite Book Discussion & TourFor Bowers Members only: A Book Club experience
The October 2024 Book Club selection is Gods of Jade and Shadow by Canadian Mexican novelist Silvia Moreno-Garcia. The author’s unique narration style takes Mayan myths and combines historical fiction and fantasy to tell a modern story set in the 1920’s Mexico. A young woman accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death who requests her help to recover his throne. Their whirlwind cross-country journey through Mexico is vivid with jazz, the memories of revolution, and gods, demons, and magic from Baja to the Yucatan jungle and the darkness of the Mayan underworld. “Moreno-Garcia's Gods of Jade and Shadow is a modern mythology fantasy about gods, destiny, change, and understanding your true self.” (Elitist Book Reviews Oct 2019) The book was nominated for Best Fantasy novel in 2019 and is featured in the upcoming exhibit, Fantasy: Realms of Imagination from the British Library. 335 pages.
Following the book discussion, there will be a slideshow presentation on Mexico’s Indigenous cultures and myths, followed by a brief tour.
Free for Bowers Members. RSVP on Bowers.org. Space is limited to 30 Bowers Members per discussion. A confirmation email will be sent to participants prior to the event.
