About the book:
In this unique, illustrated collection, Literary Witches co-creator Katy Horan unearths the true and fictional stories behind twenty traditional M**der ballads, exploring the beauty and horror of the art form through stories, lyrics, and original illustrations.
From “Delia's Gone” to “The Death of Queen Jane,” each of twenty carefully chosen ballads is accompanied by one of Horan’s beautifully macabre illustrations and a thoroughly researched reflection on the song's history and evolution. At the back of the book, readers can browse a list of essential recordings for each ballad.
Mysterious and alluring as the songs themselves, M**der Ballads will delight history enthusiasts, armchair musicologists, true crime fans (and critics), as well as anyone who appreciates the darker side of folk music.
About the author:
Katy Horan is an illustrator and interdisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the United States and in Canada, published in several books, and four times selected for New American Paintings. She lives and works in Austin.
About the moderator:
Laurie Gallardo considers herself extremely fortunate to have a job doing something she loves, which is working in music – a lifelong passion. Gallardo hosts an afternoon music show on KUTX 98.9, Monday through Thursday 1-5PM (Central) for which she’s won seven Austin Music Industry Awards for Best Radio Personality in a row, as well as an induction into the Austin Music Industry Hall of Fame. She’s also host and producer of KUTX’s Austin Music Minute, a segment promoting live music performances in Austin by local as well as nationally and internationally-known artists.
In addition to her far-reaching broadcast platform, Gallardo has also made a name for herself as a voice actor, featured on various documentaries, anime series, video games, commercials, and theatrical projects. As a film actor, Gallardo made her big-screen debut in the 2014 independent thriller, Two Step, written and directed by Alex Johnson, and has a comedic role in writer/director Dash Donato’s independent film, Foxy Trot. Gallardo also has a leading role in the beautifully haunting short film Goodbye Sirena, based on a screenplay by Tracee Beebe and directed by Melissa Dalley.
Gallardo is also the creator, host and coproducer of the podcast (SPF 1000) Vampire Sunscreen, from KUT and KUTX Studios, in which she asks only one question of her guests: “What is the darkness to you?” The podcast quickly gained attention through the amazing conversations emerging from such a powerful query.
By purchasing a book from BookPeople, you are not only supporting a local, independent business – you’re showing publishers that they should continue sending authors to BookPeople.
Thank you for supporting Katy Horan, Laurie Gallardo, and your local independent bookstore!
