About the book:
The Vet Will See You Now is best described as Kitchen Confidential meets All Creatures Great and Small. Using stories as a backdrop, the book delivers current veterinary information that every pet owner can use. Dr. Benaryeh takes readers behind the scenes of a veterinary examination room, telling them what veterinarians really think and what happens when you walk through the “Employees Only” door to the other side.
The stories are irreverent, bitingly satirical, often humorous, and sometimes tragic. Each tale is purposeful in nature and relates to the topic at hand. The two beginning chapters address adding a pet to a household, and further chapters move through topics like recognizing emergencies, choosing a veterinarian, treating cancer, kidney disease, diabetes, and more. The final chapter deals with the last and most difficult decision every pet owner will eventually face: euthanasia. In a rapidly changing profession, readers ride shotgun with a veterinarian and hear an insider’s view of the veterinary profession, learning how to be a better consumer as they go. Dr. Benaryeh draws on his own vast experience with personal pets as the book moves through the life cycle of animals and his life as a veterinarian and pet owner.
Some stories are outlandish; not the type you expect in your ordinary book by a veterinarian. They range from dead pets that aren’t dead, fake testicles, dog food mishaps, and other events that give meaning to the phrase: truth is stranger than fiction. Whether you seek veterinary information or pure entertainment, this book will not disappoint.
About the author:
Barak Benaryeh is a practicing veterinarian in Austin, Texas and the founding partner of Spicewood Springs Animal and Spicewood Springs Cat Hospitals. Barak graduated veterinary school from the University of California, Davis and then completed an additional year of training in Small Animal Medicine, Surgery, and Emergency at the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in canine and feline practice and has been working in the veterinary profession for over thirty-five years seeing dogs, cats, and the occasional monkey. Dr. Benaryeh speaks at conferences and is a regular contributor to veterinary journals. In his free time, you will find him in any of the cold-water swimming pools in Austin or on a hike with his family and 2 dogs. The family cats and various reptiles stay home and wreck the house.
About the moderator:
Juli Berwald received her Ph.D. in Ocean Science at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Spineless, about jellyfish, and Life on the Rocks, about coral, and has written for Texas Monthly, Nautilus, National Geographic, Nature, and Science, among others. She is also the President of Tela Coral, a non-profit working to understand an exceptionally healthy coral reef in Honduras.
