About the book:

The poems in this book move through ideas of race, of fear, of sexuality, of life already lived in low- level terror now amplified, of the weight of responsibility, of the burdens of age—trying to find a way to breathe every day in what is a permanent upset of an already shaky imbalance, to find a new position in spaces erupting with old hate, old jealousies, old greeds.

About the author:

C. Prudence Arceneaux, a native Texan, teaches English and Creative Writing at Austin Community College, in Austin, TX. Her work has appeared in various journals, including The Academy of American Poets’ Poem- A- Day, Limestone, New Texas, Hazmat Review, Texas Observer, Whiskey Island Magazine, African Voices and Inkwell. She is the author of two chapbooks of poetry-- DIRT (awarded the 2018 Jean Pedrick Prize) and LIBERTY, and the full length collection PROPRIOCEPTION.

About the moderator:

Chris Gardner has been an educator in Texas for more than 25 years. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Composition and Literary Studies at Austin Community College, and often serves as a reader for the Balcones Prizes in Poetry and Fiction. When not reading, you might find him looking at birds, walking his dog, or weighing the pros and cons of a run. Sometimes all at once.
