This hard-hitting neo-noir, in which police corruption meets Hollywood celebrity, features break-out performances from Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce who were relatively unknown outside of Australasia at the time. Director Curtis Hanson adapted James Ellroy’s 1990 novel, the third in his L.A. Quartet series, while Crowe and Pearce in full flight had strong support from Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger and Danny DeVito. The film was nominated for nine Oscars and won two, for Best Adapted Screenplay (Hanson and Brian Helgeland) and Kim Basinger as Best Supporting Actress. Voted by many critics as the best film of 1997, and named by the London Film Critics Circle in 2009 as one of the best films of the past 30 years!
