About this Event

“13 Stories of War - Ukraine” brings together the work of Ukrainian photographers who have been documenting the war with Russia, following the full-scale invasion of 2022. Each contributor brings a unique perspective on the profound impact of war on Ukraine and its people, and through their work, readers gain a deeper appreciation of the enduring power of human resilience during these tumultuous times.

Join one of the book’s co-editors, photographer Emine Ziyatdinova (@emine_ziyatdinova), in conversation with photographer Alan Chin (@alanschin), for a discussion of the work followed by a Q&A.

“13 Stories of War - Ukraine” features work from Julia Kochetova, Yana Kononova, Evgeniy Maloletka, Lisa Bukreyeva, Roman Pashkovskiy, Alena Grom, Sergii Polezhaka, Dmytro Kozatskyi, Sasha Kurmaz, Alexander Glyadyelov, Olia Koval, Viacheslav Ratynskyi, and Roman Bordun.

Alan Chin was born and raised in New York City’s Chinatown. Since 1996, he has worked in China, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Central Asia, and Ukraine, as well as extensively in the United States. He is a contributing photographer to many publications, including The New York Times, Business Insider, and Foreign Policy. He is an Adjunct Professor at the New School's Schools of Public Engagement and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, and his work is in the collections of the Museum Of Modern Art and the Detroit Institute of Arts, and exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York. He is also a co-founder and the Managing Director of Facing Change: Documenting America / Documenting Detroit, a community-based photojournalism initiative; Alan is also a publisher of photography books, formerly as a co-founder and partner of Red Hook Editions and currently co-founder of Jet Age Books.

Emine Ziyatdinova is a Crimean Tatar documentary photographer and co-founder and director of the NGO Ukrainian Warchive, a digital photo archive of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Emine's work has been supported by a Fulbright Scholarship and a Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund Fellowship. Her photography projects have been showcased in exhibitions both in Ukraine and internationally.
