Duluth author and photographer Tom Haas will be at Zenith Bookstore on Saturday, June 15th, 1-3 pm, signing copies of his new book Isle Royale: A Photographer's Circumnavigation 1967-1987. Haas spent 20 summers kayaking along Isle Royale's shores and small barrier islands, and hiking its mainland, hauling along a 12-pound large-format camera and an 8-pound tripod. He captured over 3,000 black-and-white iimages of the island, including pictures of the ardchipelago's summertime residents, a mix of commercial-fishing families and the descendants of those who first visited as far back as the 1890s.
Thirty years after the project ended, Tom and his wife Jeannie Thoren selected 275 of their favorite images from the collection, each at once an artistic expression and a document of Isle Royale's rich cultural and natural history, for this book.
Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1948, Tom Haas attended the University of Connecticut to study science, but used much of his time teaching himself photograph-developing techniques using the Biology Department’s underutilized dark room. While he photographed Isle Royale in the summer and fall, Haas drifted into a career in the Nordic ski industry. In the early 1970s he worked at the Lutsen Resort along the North Shore of Lake Superior, skiing every day. He soon became an accomplished Nordic skier, winning the 1977 American Birkebeinar, an annual 55 kilometer cross-country ski marathon between Cable and Hayward, Wisconsin. He also managed the Continental Ski Shop in Duluth, Minnesota. In 1992, Haas married fellow skier and Isle Royale enthusiast Jeannie Thoren, a Yooper from Marquette, Michigan. In 2009 they became co-owners of Jeannie Thoren’s Women’s Ski Center in Vail, Colorado, the first ski shop in the country to cater exclusively to women. Today Jeannie and Tom — both retired — live in Duluth.
