About the book
The truth about the military draft during the Vietnam-era, 1964 to 1975, was difficult to define or understand for those caught up in its excruciatingly wide net. This war targeted the young working- class American male like a laser. Rich kids then, America’s leaders today, were given every opportunity to avoid the draft – a good false letter from an MD or psychiatrist, a good lawyer, college kids were not drafted. The rich kids, with powerful fathers and good legal advice took advantage of all the above and did not serve. Poor kids waited their turn and yielded to the inevitable. Didn’t the USA defend liberty and freedom, as in WWII? Vets discovered the hard way – no. Today’s much lauded Volunteer Army is mostly poor kids too. The rich and powerful still avoid military service.
Then there was the racial issue, Martin Luther King had been assassinated in April of 1968, American cities went up in flames. Resulting in black boys, black militants, being drafted by the tens of thousands, and a few Black Panthers too. These young black males hated the white man. Our white racists hated the black man. The author of this book was drafted in June 1969, in the middle of a hate filled Army.
About the author
Carroll McInroe worked in the Military Intelligence section of a Nuclear HQ, staffed by professionals & a few Phoenix assassins. He lived in a barracks torn by racial strife. They were soldiers, black and white, who paid a terrible price in 1969 for what began in 1619. All their lives were forever changed.
Reviews
If you think the Civil War ended a century and a half ago, you should read this book about the violence in the U.S. Army after the murder of Dr. Martin L. King. The U.S. Army was torn by internecine warfare. Hatred raged, often at close range. Carroll tells an amazing story of the good, the bad, the ugly.

Carroll McInroe enriches the literature of the Vietnam War era with Death Came with the Postman. While he (barely) escaped serving in combat, as a young soldier in the South he was surrounded by war trauma and military insanity, later suffering the consequences. His harrowing tales of training in biological and nuclear warfare, the racial and class tensions he navigated, and his ability to put his experiences in historical context make his story worth reading. Kudos to him for his memoir and his decades of service to veterans.
