The Chincoteague Island Library will host a book signing and fire safety talk event on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 6:00pm. Capt. Nicholette Steffes, Ret., author of the memoir series The Ghosts of Route 13, will share stories from her book and meet with readers for personalized signings.
About the Author
Nicholette Steffes is a retired Accomack County Department of Public Safety firefighter/paramedic captain. She spent nearly a decade on the front lines of emergency response along Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Her memoir series, The Ghosts of Route 13, captures the grit, heart, and humanity behind the sirens, sharing unforgettable stories from her time in the fire service. When she’s not writing, Nicholette continues to serve her community through outreach, fire safety education, and supporting causes that honor first responders.

In addition to the book signing, Steffes will speak in recognition of the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home!” It highlights the growing importance of safe practices when using rechargeable devices such as e-bikes, cell phones, laptops, and power tools.

“As someone who has lived through the realities of fire and emergency response, I know how important prevention is,” said Steffes. “I’m honored to combine my passion for writing with the opportunity to educate the community about fire safety.”

The event will include:
• A discussion of The Ghosts of Route 13 and the real-life stories behind it
• Book sales and signings
• A community talk on this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme
• Q&A and book signing

This event is free and open to the public. Copies of The Ghosts of Route 13 will be available for purchase on-site.
