Join us for an evening, featuring co-author Harley D. Balzer where he examines how Vladimir Putin’s rule—marked by centralized power, corruption, and repression—has hindered reforms, weakened institutions, and driven Russia into long-term decline. The book reveals how the gains of the early 2000s have dissipated, leaving a nation mired in demographic decline, educational setbacks, and strategic overreach abroad. This presentation will offer fresh insights into the realities behind Putin’s rhetoric—and the long-term consequences for Russia’s future on the global stage.

Harley D. Balzer, Emeritus Professor at Georgetown University, directed its Russian Area Studies Program (later the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies) from 1987, after teaching at Grinnell College and Boston University and holding fellowships at Harvard and MIT. A former Congressional Fellow, he played a key role in creating “Title VIII” funding for Soviet and post-Soviet studies. Balzer spent extended periods in the USSR, visited Russia over 50 times, and led Soros’s International Science Foundation. His books include Soviet Science on the Edge of Reform (1989), Five Years That Shook the World (1991), and Russia’s Missing Middle Class (1996).
