Cease to Contend: Healing a Nation through Christlike Civility in Politics is a new book by Dr. Rodney B. Dieser, a frequent visitor to Nauvoo. Although he lives in Cedar Falls, Iowa, as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he travels to Nauvoo six to ten times a year to attend the Nauvoo Temple.
This small book outlines three steps all people can do -- at the individual level -- to increase political civility. Those three steps, rooted in scripture and from LDS General Authorities and leaders, are creating a humble and acquiring mindset, learning to listen to understand and not listen to argue and gaining media literacy skills.
As a practicing Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a professor who has spent 20 plus years writing on such topics, Dr. Dieser drew on the literature in marriage/couples therapy and blended it with church principles (with the church principles primary; marriage/couples therapy literature secondary).
Cease to Contend draws from the example of Pahoran in the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants 136:23, a directive from the Lord to the Saints. A more detailed description of this book can be found at
