The event starts at 17:00 with drinks, followed by discussion from 18:00-19:00. From 19:00-21:00 there will be a DJ playing records and you can enjoy the installation. Free admission!

“How does the stage work?” is a handbook for the Western contemporary stage. In this book aimed at professionals, students and enthusiasts of performing arts, Erno Aaltonen explores the relationship between daily artistic choices and the ideologies, rules and conventions that govern what the contemporary stage can do.
Through analysis and personal speculation, Aaltonen brings focus to the conflicting norms, rules and ideologies of the stage, that are often masked as invisible and neutral. Correspondingly, some counter tools are outlined – how to challenge, stretch or break the existing rules and create new more inclusive ones. While the main questions of the book have emerged from stage design, its inquiries also extend to choreography, directing, dramaturgy, and performance production.
“How does the stage work?” is a reflection of Erno Aaltonen’s personal practice as an artist as well as a byproduct of years of collective thinking and performance making in different contexts. The book can be read on a phone as a freely downloadable .pdf slideshow.
Erno Aaltonen (b. 1985, he/him) is a white Finnish lighting designer, scenographer and co-creator working in performing arts. His work is situated in between what is being performed and the audience experience, whether it means artistic dialogue, visual design or technical production. He is interested in how the contemporary stage works and how understanding design can help us understand the ideologies that constitute the artwork. Aaltonen is a frequent collaborator of choreographers Sonya Lindfors, Ima Iduozee, Emmi Venna and Anna Maria Häkkinen.

How does the stage work? on opaskirja läntisen maailman nykynäyttämöille. Kirjoittaja Erno Aaltonen tutkii teoksessa arkisten taiteellisten valintojen sekä nykynäyttämön mahdollisuuksia määrittävien ideologioiden, sääntöjen ja konventioiden välistä suhdetta. Teos on suunnattu alan ammattilaisille, opiskelijoille ja muille esittävästä taiteesta kiinnostuneille.
Aaltonen suuntaa analyysin ja spekulaation kautta huomion näyttämön ristiriitaisiin normeihin, sääntöihin ja ideologioihin, jotka usein naamioidaan näkymättömiksi tai esitetään neutraaleina. Hän tarjoaa näiden vastaiskuksi erilaisia työkaluja, joiden avulla haastaa, venyttää sekä rikkoa vakiintuneita sääntöjä ja luoda uusia ja inklusiivisempia käytäntöjä. Teos on saanut alkunsa lavasuunnittelun maailmassa, mutta se ulottaa katseensa myös koreografiaan, ohjaukseen, dramaturgiaan ja esitystuotantoon.
How does the stage work? reflektoi Aaltosen omaa henkilökohtaista praktiikkaa ollen samalla vuosia kestäneen kollektiivisen ajattelun ja eri kontekstisten esitystuotantojen sivutuote. Teos on taitettu älypuhelimelle ja sen voi ladata maksutta PDF-muodossa UrbanApan nettisivuilta.
Erno Aaltonen (s. 1985) on valkoinen suomalainen valosuunnittelija ja lavastaja. Hänen työnsä sijoittuu esityksen ja yleisökokemuksen väliin, tarkoittaen toisinaan dialogia tai visuaalista suunnittelua tai teknistä tuotantoa. Häntä kiinnostaa nykynäyttämön toimintatavat ja kuinka suunnittelun ymmärtäminen auttaa ymmärtämään taidetta muovaavia ideologioita. Aaltonen on tehnyt paljon yhteistyötä koreografien Sonya Lindfors, Ima Iduozee, Emmi Venna ja Anna Maria Häkkinen kanssa.
Saavutettavuus
Tekstin talon esteetön sisäänkäynti sijaitsee osoitteessa Lintulahdenkatu 3. Lintulahdenkatu on rinteessä, joten pääsisäänkäynnin edustalla on kaltevuutta molempiin suuntiin. Tekstin talon tilat sijaitsevat rakennuksen ensimmäisessä, neljännessä ja kuudennessa kerroksessa. Jokaisessa kerroksessa on esteetön wc.
Käynti Permantosaliin kulkee kahden oven kautta. Ovien leveys on 80 cm (+ avattava levike 30 cm), oviaukoissa on 2 cm korkeat sisääntulosuunnasta porrastetut kynnykset. Ensimmäisen oven jälkeen kuljetaan käytävää, ja ovi Permantosaliin on käytävän päässä vasemmalla.
