Other Paths for Shahrazad: an Arabic/English Anthology of Contemporary Poetry by Arab Women will be launching on May 9th at 2pm-4pm at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square, in the Commonwealth Room.
In the Foreword to this astonishing and timely anthology, Iraqi poet and activist Elham Nasser Al-Zabedy says, "Today, dear reader, wherever you find yourself on this vast earth, come sail with us through the currents of words penned by Arab women hailing from diverse cities. Navigate these shores, gathering shells, turning over stones that may either prick or allure you. Perhaps you’ll reach out to grasp one or strive to collect pearls, diving deep between their grains."
About Shahrazad, anthology editor Jennifer Jean says in her Preface, "She was the star and narrator of 1001 Nights, a series of tales in Arabic traced back past the 9th century. She was the captive of King Shahryar and distracted him from his murderous impulses with her fantastic stories. Much like the women in this volume, she tells stories to mesmerize, to stay sane, to survive."
This event will feature anthology editors, translators, publishers, poets, and Her Story Is members reading anthology poems in both Arabic and English.
Readers and speakers include: Martha Collins, Miled Faiza, Julia Gettle, Faleeha Hassan, Mohamed Hassan, Nahla Hassan, Lis Horowitz, Jennifer Jean, Jeffrey Levine, Amy Merrill, Dzvinia Orlowsky, Alma Richeh, Ghufran Yousif, and more.
Sponsors for the event include: Tupelo Press, the Center for Arabic Culture, and Fort Point Theatre Channel. The book will be available for purchase on site, after the event. Refreshments will be available after the event, as well.
The library is located at 700 Boylston Street in Boston--consider using public transportation, or using ParkWhiz to reserve a spot in a nearby parking garage or at metered spots around the library.
