It's time to bring the book club back! Here at ThreadATL we talk about good urbanism. This time we'll talk about intentions of good design gone wrong.
Our book will be Meet Me By The Fountain by Alexandra Lange (please get a copy from your local library or bookstore). It's a fascinating history of the development of the shopping mall and what its intentions were. Yes, to sell goods but also to recreate a main street in an autopia built around cars.
We'll meet at Greenbriar Mall. Opened in 1965, one of the earliest John Portman designs, the site was envisioned as a 130 acre "urban complex". with housing, goods, and services. The mall pioneered the concept of a food court (Chik Fil A opened its first store beyond the Dwarf House there). The first anchor tenant was Rich's.
The history of the mall is rich. Its future uncertain. Join us we talk about malls and this mall and meet and mingle as we revisit our teenage years of meeting by the fountain.
Links about Greenbriar Mall will be added to the comments. We'll also update specifically where at the mall we will meet.
