Bone Stress Injuries & Marathon Training 2026

As the 2026 Marathon Season approaches, the running community is experiencing a sharp rise in Bone Stress Injuries (BSI); from early stress reactions to full stress fractures.

This exclusive in-person workshop, hosted through the collaboration of Fortius Clinic and The Running Room London, brings together leading clinical minds to explore why BSIs are increasing, how to identify risk earlier, and how practitioners can intervene effectively in both recreational and elite runners.

Hosted by Luke Vanderfeen and Sophie Vechionne of The Running Room London, alongside:

This is an interactive workshop, designed to challenge thinking, share real-world case insights, and translate evidence into practical clinical frameworks.

Prof Andy Roche is a Consultant Foot and Ankle Surgeon (MSc, FRCS Tr&Orth) specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of foot and ankle conditions, both operative and non-operative. His practice includes sports injuries, ankle ligament and fracture management, bunions, Morton’s neuromas, arthritis, foot deformities, tendinopathies and plantar fasciitis. He has particular expertise in the mechanisms of sports injuries, optimisation of athletic rehabilitation, and the correction of complex foot and ankle deformities using advanced internal and external fixation techniques.

Anthony Waring is a Consultant in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine (MBChB, MSc, PGCert, FFSEM) with a strong focus on the non-surgical management of musculoskeletal and sporting injuries. He specialises in bone stress injuries, tendon pathology, lower back pain and overuse injuries, and routinely uses point-of-care musculoskeletal ultrasound to guide diagnosis and treatment. Dr Waring works within multidisciplinary teams to optimise performance and support return to full function, and currently holds consultant roles with British Athletics and Fulham Football Club, alongside extensive experience across elite sport, endurance events and academic teaching.

Luke Vanderfeen is the lead physiotherapist at The Running Room London and a recognised expert in the assessment, management and rehabilitation of Bone Stress Injuries (BSI). Working at the intersection of high-performance sport, technology and recovery, Luke is known for challenging traditional rehabilitation norms and raising the standard of how running injuries are diagnosed, managed and prevented. His approach blends evidence-led load management, movement analysis and performance-driven rehabilitation, supporting athletes from early injury identification through to confident return to competition. At The Running Room, he plays a key role in setting industry benchmarks for athlete care, resilience and long-term performance.

Sophie Vechionne is a specialist REDs physiotherapist at The Running Room London, known for breaking stigma, challenging outdated public health narratives, and redefining how energy availability and bone health are addressed in runners. Working closely alongside Luke, she is building The Running Room’s dedicated REDs clinic, supporting both women and men, with particular expertise in ultra-runners and athletes who have struggled to return to running following Bone Stress Injuries. Sophie’s work centres on restoring confidence, rebuilding resilience, and guiding athletes through complex physical and psychological barriers to sustainable, high-performance return-to-run outcomes.
