(1980, Philippines, 86m, Tagalog with English subtitles) dir Lino Brocka w/ Nora Aunor and Philip Salvador. Bona, a young woman from a patriarchal family, becomes infatuated with Gardo, a narcissistic, womanizing, B-movie actor. When her father reacts violently after discovering that the two spent the night together, Bona abandons her home and moves in with her crush. Completely hypnotized by the man, she becomes his servant and substitute mother figure as she descends into destitution and obsession. The feminist climax is not what you expect, but you will never forget it!
“To claim that Lino Brocka has influenced our cinema is not accurate. Lino Brocka is part of our DNA, part of our national psyche,” said Lav Diaz, one of the icons of contemporary Filipino cinema. Coming to international attention thanks to Pierre Rissient in the mid-1970s, Brocka’s cinema has imposed itself with disruptive force since his first appearance at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 1978. New restoration!
Tickets are FREE and will be available when the doors open at 6:30!
