Bon Iver is an American indie folk band founded in 2006 by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. Vernon released Bon Iver's debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, independently in July 2007. The majority of the album was recorded while Vernon spent three months isolated in a cabin in western Wisconsin.

It was during this time of isolation that Justin Vernon unexpectedly wrote and recorded a full album by the time spring arrived. The name Bon Iver is an intentionally misspelled version of the French phrase, “good winter.” He named his first album For Emma, Forever Ago (2007) and it quickly gained recognition for its emotional authenticity.
