BOHEMIAN BUNKER
Boheemibunkkeri. Galleria Rankan projekti kesälle 2026. Kansainvälinen, koska kesä 2026 on kansainvälinen. Tässä kannattaa unohtaa jalkapallo ja muut humputukset. Ennätyshelteet eivät tunne rajoja, ja nyt jos koskaan, on ymmärrettävä, että meillä kaikilla on rangaistuspotkuja suurempi huolenaihe. Lämmintä pitää. Siinä sivussa aseet puhuvat ympäri maailmaa ja seuraava ydinpommi odottaa vain käyttäjäänsä.
Maailman näyttäessä tältä tarvitsemme suojarakennelmaa, ja klassinen malli on ensimmäisen maailmansodan aikaiset hiilikellareista muoto-oppinsa ottaneet jykevät betonibunkkerit. Sinne ei ulkomaailmalla ole asiaa. Ilman liekinheittimiä.
Suhteellisen vastakkainen tarve verrattuna 20-luvun kulttuurivallankumouksemme sankareihin, Tulenkantajiin. He halusivat ikkunat auki Eurooppaan. Nuoressa valtakunnassamme siihen oli omat hyvät syynsä: vapaudenhuuman ja avarakatseisuuden sijaan saimme niskoillemme kasan ahdasmielisyyttä ja sitä seuranneen kieltolain. Ikkunat auki Eurooppaan tarkoitti lain sallimia leppoisia lasillisia punaviiniä bulevardikahviloissa. Kelpaisi tänäänkin, ellei alkoholi uhkaisi haihtua lasista.
Mutta sadan vuoden välimatka tarjoaa oman yhteytensä. Elämme konservatismin aallon keskellä. Yksilöllisyys, vapaamieliyys ja epäsovinnaisuus ovat sosiaalisen median valtakaudella harvinaista herkkua. Eli vanhat kunnon boheemit ovat arvomaailmoineen jäämässä jyrän alle.
Eivätkä omat taantumuksen torvensoittajamme ole yksin maailmassa. Kaikki maailman nationalistit ovat liittymässä yhteen. Kivikauden ja vahvojen johtajien kaipuu ylittää helleaallon tavoin kaikki kansalliset rajat ja kaikkialla meitä varjostaa Tuomari Nurmion maalaama musta enkeli, jonka maailmassa ei säästy viattominkaan. Eivätkä taiteilijat.
Siksi meidän on katsottava kohti Tulenkantajia. Eurooppa kun ei tarkoita pelkästään viinilasillisia, vaan yhteistä kotiamme ja kasvukenttäämme. Nyt ei kuitenkaan kannata avata ikkunoita, tarvitsemme jotain muuta. Turvallisen tilan vapaudelle, veljeydelle ja tasa-arvolle, ja nämä ovat sanoja, joiden merkitys ei rajoitu kansallisuuteen eikä vallankumoukseen… vaan siihen, miten elämme. Tarvitsemme todellisen bunkkerin säilyttääksemme oikeutemme erilaisuuteen. Ja rakennamme sitä tässä ja nyt, Galleria Rankan näyttelyssä, yhdessä saksalaisen ja hollantilaisen taiderihmaston kanssa. Kaukana kansallisuusaatteesta ja arvokonservatiivisuudesta. Tarvitsemme henkisen suojan voidaksemme katsoa tulevaisuuteen. Yksin ja yhdessä.

Bohemian Bunker. Galleria Rankka’s project for the summer of 2026. International, because the summer of 2026 is international. Here, it’s best to forget about soccer and other nonsense. Global warming knows no borders, and now, in the heat of these days, we must realize that we all have bigger concerns than penalty kicks. It is warm out there. Meanwhile, guns are firing all over the world, and the next nuclear weapon is just waiting for someone to use it.
With the world looking like this, we need a shelter. The classic model is the sturdy concrete bunkers created during the First World War. The outside world had no access there. Without flamethrowers. The modern world proved those days its efficacy. In killing. And the bunker was a response to that.
Following this multi-European slaughter, some new nation-states emerged. Take our northern country, for instance. However, the newly formed cultural elite were not interested in local traditions; they wanted to open the windows to Europe. There were good reasons for this: instead of the euphoria of freedom and open-mindedness, we were burdened with narrow-mindedness and the prohibition that followed. Opening the windows to Europe meant, among other things, the leisurely glasses of red wine, permitted by law, in boulevard cafés. This would be fine even today if the heat didn't threaten to evaporate the alcohol from the glass.
But the hundred-year gap connects us. We’re living in the midst of a wave of conservatism. In the age of social media, qualities such as individuality, open-mindedness, and nonconformity are becoming increasingly rare. In other words, the traditional values of legendary bohemians are being steamrolled.
And our own heralds of regression are not alone in this globe. Nationalists of the world are uniting; the longing for the good old days with starving workers and strong leaders is sweeping across all national borders like a heat wave, and everywhere we are overshadowed by the black angel in whose world not even the innocent are spared. Nor are artists.
That is why we must not forget the open windows. After all, Europe is not just about glasses of wine. Rather, it is our shared home and the field where we grow. Now, however, is not the time just to open the windows; we need something else. We need a safe space for freedom, brotherhood, and equality—and these are words whose meaning is not limited to nationality or revolution... but to how we live. We need a real bunker to protect our right to be different. And we’re building it here and now, at the Galleria Rankka exhibition, together with a group of German and Dutch artists. Far removed from nationalist ideology and conservative values. We need a bohemian shelter so we can look toward stability. Alone and together.
