Bogolanfini (Mud Cloth) Dyeing Workshop

Join us for an introduction to Bogolanfini, the traditional mud-dyeing practice of the Bamana people of Mali, West Africa. In this hands-on workshop, we will explore the cultural history and symbolism behind this powerful textile tradition while creating our own patterned cloth using earth-based dyes.

Participants will design and dye a cotton bandana using painting techniques inspired by traditional Bogolanfini methods.

Because the fabrics require special preparation ahead of time, all materials will be provided. Each participant will receive a prepared cotton bandana ready for dyeing, allowing us to focus our time together on design, experimentation, and the magic that unfolds when earth meets cloth.

This workshop at Merritt College is open to beginners and anyone curious about natural dyes, textile traditions, and slow craft.

Verenice Berroa-Torres, natural dye expert and artist, teaches throughout the East Bay. Her profound connection with the natural world fuels her inquisitive spirit, leading her to explore the relationship between humanity, art, and nature.
