Bog Plant ID Workshop - Humberhead Peatlands

Overview of the Day

The workshop will begin at 9:00am at the Humberhead Peatlands National Nature Reserve, where attendees can gather for refreshments before departing for Thorne Moors. Transport will be provided in Natural England vehicles, with an approximate travel time of 40 minutes. Ample parking is available at the National Nature Reserve office, and participants are welcome to leave their vehicles there for the day.

Once on Thorne Moors, the group will take a guided walk across the reserve, with a series of focused plant identification sessions led by David Freeman from the Natural England Field Unit team. Key species we will examine include round leaved sundew, bog rosemary, bog cranberry, cross‑leaved heath, cottongrasses and a range of Sphagnum mosses.

Food and On‑Site Facilities

Lunch will be taken on site, so all attendees should bring their own food, snacks and sufficient drinking water for the day. There are no permanent facilities on Thorne Moors; however, a welfare van will be available, providing tea and coffee as well as access to a toilet.

Accessibility and Participation

This event is open to all, regardless of prior skill level or experience. Children under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The walk requires a moderate level of fitness, and some sections of the route will involve uneven and challenging terrain typical of peatland habitats. Wellies are required, along with weather‑appropriate clothing—waterproofs for wet conditions or hats and sunscreen in warm weather. Long sleeves and trousers are recommended to prevent biting insects.

The day will conclude back at the Humberhead Nature Reserve office at approximately 3:00–4:00pm.
