Free demonstration 1:30 - 4:30 New England Lace GroupIpswich lace stands as a singular gem in American textile history—the only known hand-made bobbin lace to be commercially produced in the United States. Its story is rooted in the coastal town of Ipswich, MA, where a vibrant community of lacemakers flourished during the 18th century. What makes Ipswich lace truly remarkable is not only its intricate beauty but also the way it reflects the ingenuity and resilience of its creators. Women and children, often working together in their homes, became the backbone of this craft, using their skills to supplement household incomes during a time when economic opportunities were limited, especially for women. Lace making was more than a trade; it was a lifeline, and its techniques were carefully passed down from generation to generation, fostering a tradition of artistry and connection within families and the wider community.
Workshop from 2:00 - 4:00, you’ll learn the foundational stitches of bobbin lace and the crucial tools and techniques to get you going on your lacemaking journey. Today, the New England Lace Group (NELG) is dedicated to preserving and sharing this unique chapter of American heritage. With generous grant support from the International Organization of Lace, NELG has developed a mobile exhibit that traces the known history of Ipswich lace and celebrates the stories of its makers. Unveiled at Old Sturbridge Village in September 2022, the exhibit will travel to the Colonial Crafts for Today 250th Celebration in Northampton in 2026, offering new audiences the chance to discover the artistry and significance of Ipswich lace firsthand.
No prior experience is necessary! You’ll learn the foundational stitches of bobbin lace and the crucial tools and techniques to get you going on your lacemaking journey.
