In honor of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 7pm, at the Adams Academy, perennial favorite Bob Begin will return to share a newly researched talk on the U.S.S. Bunker Hill and the aircraft carrier’s service during the Battle of Okinawa. Begin will also share the story of one American pilot who documented the battle from the decks of the Bunker Hill in his art and letters. In May of 1945, Allied forces were surrounding Okinawa, the last step on the long road to Tokyo. On board the Quincy-built aircraft carrier Bunker Hill (CA-17) was a pilot, Lt.(j.g.) Alexander Domonkos, a relative of Mr. Begin. The Battle of Okinawa is remembered for the ferociousness of the fighting, nicknamed the “typhoon of steel” because of the heighted use of kamikaze attacks. The U.S.S. Bunker Hill was struck by two such attacks, killing and wounding over 600 American servicemen. At least three Quincy men were among the dead and wounded.
Mr. Begin’s talk will recount the story of the battle, the constant pressure of air attack, the mindset of the kamikaze pilots, and the countless acts of courage and sacrifice. Lt. Domonkos’ paintings and family letters will also be featured, highlighting the impact of the war back home, and the memory of the events Lt. Domonkos was witness to.
