Ambitious in scope yet intimate in perspective, Chan Tze Woon’s Blue Island is the first hybrid documentary made in the wake of Hong Kong’s 2019 social movement. Poetically blending narrative reenactments, self-reflexive interviews, and intergenerational conversations, the film stages an encounter across two generations of activists and four key events in Hong Kong’s history—the 1967 leftist riots, the Cultural Revolution, the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown, and the 2019 protests. The dialogue between characters raises questions about the nebulous nature of Hong Kong identity, while capturing the impact of time on how memory is carried forward.
Winner of the Best International Feature Documentary Award at Hot Docs 2022, Blue Island is at once vibrantly political and quietly mournful, a reflection on this small city’s turbulent past, present, and future.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with the audience, moderated by artist Serene Hui and ASCA PhD candidate Hannah Poon.
