Many of our PADHC members and wider community have been impacted by cancer in one way or another. June is Bowel Cancer Awareness month, and we’d like to take the opportunity to raise awareness of Australia’s second deadliest cancer.
Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June, we encourage all PADHC players to raise awareness by donning armbands, ribbons and stick tape in the bright blue for bowel cancer awareness.
Our M5W, M5M and M6M will be playing at PADHC on Saturday 22 June, and will be wearing blue socks for this occasion.
12:30pm M5M vs SPOC
2:00pm M6M vs Enfield
3:30pm M5W vs SPOC
As many of our members may know, our own Mike ‘Ando’ Anderson is currently battling bowel cancer. Ando is a much-appreciated member of the PADHC community, whose contribution to umpiring, playing, coaching and general club activities has benefitted all club members. There’s a high chance he’s covered an umpiring duty for you over the years!
In honour of Ando, we’re inviting all PADHC players, families and the wider community to wear a loud shirt and join us for a counter meal at PADHC on Saturday 22 June. For those playing away, come back to the club after your game as counter meals will be available until 8:30pm.
We will also have some other fundraising activities across the weekend, so stay tuned.
This fundraiser is driven by the efforts of Harper and the Stoll family. 14-year-old Harper is a member of our Under 16 Girls group, who also plays with our M3 and M5 women’s teams. As Harper has noted:
“A few years ago, my Papa died of Bowel Cancer. Last year a good family friend passed away and now we have another good family friend, umpire, legend Mike Ando Anderson fighting the fight.
June is Bowel Cancer awareness month. I would like to help raise awareness and money for Bowel Cancer Research. I would also like to invite sponsors, life members, committee members, family and friends to join us at this game to make any donations they can to help raise money.
I hope to see as many people as we can out there.”
Bowel cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, and it is estimated that one in 20 people will be diagnosed by the time they are 85.
People aged 50-74 are sent a bowel screening test every two years as part of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. From 1st July 2024, people aged 45-49 can also request a free screening kit to be mailed to them. Learn more at bowelcancer.org.au.
