This year we are celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing.
On July 20, 1969, a national goal set by the late President John F. Kennedy was realized: the successful performance of a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth. Mission Commander and U.S. Navy Aviator Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon, cementing the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp’s continued and historic contributions to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Those contributions include the first American in outer space, Rear Adm. Alan Shepard; four of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, including the first American to orbit Earth, Col. John Glenn; and the last man to walk on the moon, Capt. Gene Cernan.
One-quarter of U.S. astronauts have served in either the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps.
The Navy also boasts a proud history of recovering all returning U.S. spacecraft prior to the Space Shuttle era, providing ships, aircraft carriers, planes, helicopters and highly skilled personnel spanning from the Mercury capsule, to the Gemini era, through the Apollo program and to Skylab flights.
The United States of America will return to the moon in the very near future onboard the Orion spacecraft on the mission Artemis II. This crew will also include two U.S. Naval Aviators: Mission Commander Capt. G. Reid Wiseman and Pilot Capt. Victor J. Glover.
As we prepare to celebrate the 55th anniversary of one of the world’s truly remarkable moments, we will continue honoring the continued determination, bravery and sacrifice of the aviators, aircrewmen and aviation maintenance technicians who have begun their careers at the ‘Cradle of Naval Aviation.’
Through their perseverance and resilience, the strong bond between the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and our nation’s space program continues to make air and space available to everyone, for the benefit of all.
