Elevating Sexual Violence Prevention & Response for Youth with Disabilities
Elevating school, family, caregiver and community collaborations to educate and activate Arizona to prevent sexual violence against youth with disabilities.
Students with disabilities across Arizona have multiple needs that affect their ability to access safety and healing after experiencing or being exposed to sexual violence.
Sexual violence is an umbrella term that includes sexual abuse, sexual harassment, rape, sexual coercion, sexual grooming, sex trafficking, etc. Sexual violence is perpetrated through threats, coercion, control, force, exploitation, deceit, physical or mental incapacitation, and /or abuse of power/authority.
The Safety for All Summit will address how school professionals, in collaboration with parents and caregivers, can support and empower students with disabilities who have experienced or been exposed to sexual violence victimization.
WHAT TO EXPECT : The Safety for All Summit is an in-person, learning and community building opportunity featuring a keynote speaker, two interactive learning sessions, a panel discussion, lunch, and exhibitors. (Full agenda will be sent to registrants prior to the Summit.)

DETAILED AGENDA
KEYNOTE: Amplifying the Voices of Youth with Disabilities Carolyn Griffiths, PhD
The opening keynote will emphasize the need to empower youth with disabilities and provide the space for amplifying their voices irrespective of their communication capabilities. Dr. Griffiths will address vulnerability, person first v. identity first language, power dynamics within caregiver relationships, risk factors for abuse, and inspire everyone to amplify the voices and experiences of youth disabilities to elevate empowerment and self-advocacy.
LEARNING IN COMMUNITY:
The following topics/competencies will be covered throughout the Summit:
Recognize:
-Define sexual violence and the types of victimization
-Learn the latest statistics on sexual violence against youth with disabilities
-Review the ADA and mandatory laws related to reporting sexual violence victimization
Respond:
-Discuss ways to support youth victims with varying levels of independence, needs, and abilities.
-Providing adaptive support to Deaf youth.
-Learn how to provide a L.E.V.E.L. response to support safety/healing/autonomy
-Know when to file a mandatory report and activate a safety plan
Refer:
-Know how to provide a warm handoff to internal/external trauma-informed services, equipped to serve victims with disabilities
-Promote self-advocacy/empowerment
Remove barriers to help-seeking/reporting for youth victims and survivors with disabilities:
-Identify barriers to reporting victimization to law enforcement or other formal help
-Understand how intersecting identities and lived experiences impact seeking and receiving help
-Unique barriers faced by Deaf youth
-How to create safe and inclusive spaces for youth with disabilities to disclose victimization and seek help
Panelists will include youth with lived experience and subject matter experts in the field of preventing and responding to sexual violence against individuals with disabilities.
