Blood, Sweat and Linen: May Blood and the Shankill Millies Walking Tour
About this Event
Step into the world of Belfast’s linen workers and uncover the stories behind the mills of the Shankill area. This walking tour explores the people who kept the industry running, the communities they came from, and the long hours, low wages, and tough working conditions that shaped their lives.
Along the way, we’ll meet some of the women and men behind these stories, including trade unionist Saidie Patterson and former millworker turned trade union activist Baroness May Blood. From the noise and pace of the mill floor to strikes, trade unionism and community life, this tour brings Belfast’s linen industry to life, with a particular focus on the women known as the “Millies” and why many were proud to call themselves by that name.
Starting at Shankill Methodist Church. Finishing at the Millie Statue at the corner of Cambrai Street and Crumlin Road.
